The Memory Mattress Pad: More Comfort for Less Money

Memory foam has become a hot commodity over the past decade, as more and more people are realizing the many benefits of sleeping on mattresses made of this material. However, mattresses can be an expensive item to purchase; especially if your current bedroom set is still in relatively good condition. If you would like to experience the wonders of memory foam for yourself without the high price tag of a whole new mattress set, your solution may lie in a memory mattress pad that goes over the top of your current mattress.

When a Memory Mattress Pad Makes Sense
While a memory foam mattress will generally bring the greatest benefit to the user, a memory mattress topper can also work reasonably well. Keep in mind that if you current mattress is worn out or sporting an uneven surface, a memory mattress pad will probably no be sufficient to mend the problem. However, if your mattress is fairly new and in good condition, a high quality pad may add the support and comfort that will help you get a better night's sleep without the additional cost. A really good memory mattress pad won't come cheap however; you will probably still shell out at least a couple hundred dollars to get an item that will work and last the way you want it to.

Choosing your Thickness
The first

choice you will need to make when shopping for your new memory mattress pad is how thick you want it. If your mattress currently includes a pillow topper, you may not need to go with as thick of a pad. However, if you choose a pad that is too thin, you may find that it doesn't deliver the support and comfort that it promises, and its durability will be sorely lacking. Somewhere in the three to five inch range is a good rule of thumb for a memory mattress pad; thinner with a pillow top mattress and thicker if you don't have one.

Choosing your Density
Density will refer to the pounds per square foot, and will usually give an indication of how comfortable the memory mattress pad will be. Lower densities will usually provide more cushioning and less support, while higher densities will offer less give an more firmness. The density you choose will primarily be a matter of personal preference, but most people prefer something in the mid range. This would include densities of around three to five pounds per cubic foot.

A memory mattress pad can be a great solution if your current mattress isn't providing quite enough support or comfort but you are not ready to spring for a whole new mattress set. The right pad can make all the difference in a more comfortable night's sleep.
